About Boyd
Hailing from Highland, Utah, Boyd Timothy comes from a musical family. At age five, he started playing piano, and he sang in church choirs for many years. Bluegrass grabbed him when he married Emmy (3 children), in 1998. Emmy’s family is steeped in bluegrass, and Boyd quickly learned about it from her dad. He became an accomplished vocalist and instrumentalist. He is self-taught on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass, and he easily fills instrumental gaps at local jams.
Boyd is strongly pursued for membership in Utah bands, not just for his musical talents, but also for his original songs. He currently performs with Basin & Grange bluegrass band. Using two of Boyd’s originals, the band won first place at the inaugural Durango Bluegrass Meltdown band competition in 2022. In 2021, he performed at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Songwriter Showcase.
When I asked him why he writes songs, he said one of his main goals is the preservation of, and respect for, traditional bluegrass style. His “Pines of Caroline” placed 1st in the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriting Contest. The win shocked him, but it did not surprise other musicians in our community. His songs are relatable and requested in jams (a high compliment in my book). He does his part keeping bluegrass prominent in Utah while fostering the “family” feeling our traditional musicians have come to know.
Boyd also climbs mountain trails in Utah on his bikes because, well, it is difficult to play music and write songs 24/7.
